This assignment also asked us to develop three failure scenarios for the brand, and to then ideate a potential solution for each one and build it into the brand structure and design elements. The failure states, detailed below, required research and encouraged us to think from the perspective of the audience and consumers, design strategically for the future, and to design with intention.
Over the course of these revisions, my greatest challenge was capturing the intangible, invisible nature of scent in visual graphics and physical objects. This required finding the line between too little and too much information. I wanted both the motion graphics and scent diffusers to feel mysterious, providing just enough information for the audiences to feel intrigued enough to want to investigate Scense further.
The circles in the logo animation, as well as the motion graphics aim to capture of the diffusion of scent through air. For the scent diffusers, I designed the essential oil holders to be the source point of the scent, and the trays to represent the scent dispersing outwards.
Mystery as a tool was an overarching theme for us as a team, in both the visuals and brand’s structure. We learned that building an experience around something intangible means being more precise about the physical, not less. Because scent cannot be shown, every material decision, like the Hub, the invitations, the diffuser, all had to carry the conceptual weight that the product itself could not. Rather than decoration, they were the only evidence that the intangible thing exists.
